TL;DR (Summary)

You really should read this whole page, but if your time is limited, here’s a quick summary of the most salient bits.

If you sign up for email updates, I will obviously save your email so I can contact you. If you submit any forms on my site, such as comment forms, then a copy of the information you submit is saved on my server.

Your details are shared only with relevant, trusted third parties, such as my email delivery service (MailChimp) and spam filter (Akismet).

What personal data I collect and why I collect it

When you leave a comment on the site, the data shown in the comments form is collected and saved so the site can display the content of your comment. Your IP address and browser user agent string are also collected and stored to help detect and block spam comments.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: After your comment is approved, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Mailing list

If you sign up for email updates, the email address you provide is stored to keep track of your subscription and contact you with announcements and notifications about new blog posts. I use MailChimp for mailing list management and mail delivery, so your data is shared with and saved by MailChimp for the purpose of delivering these emails. The MailChimp privacy policy is available here:

If you leave a comment on the site, you may opt-in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience, so you don’t have to fill your details in again every time you leave a comment. These cookies will last for one year.

My website uses Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google, Inc. (“Google”). The information generated by the cookie about your use of the site (including your IP address) is transmitted to and stored by Google on servers in the United States. Google uses this information to evaluate your use of my website, compile reports on website activity for website operators, and provide other services relating to website activity and Internet usage. Google may also transfer this information to third parties where required to do so by law, or when such third parties process the information on Google’s behalf. Google does not associate your IP address with any other data held by Google. Google’s privacy policy can be found here:

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g., videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if you have visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Who I share your data with

I never sell, trade, or rent users’ personal identification information to others.

If you sign up for the mailing list, your information is shared with my mail delivery service, MailChimp. They are used as a transactional email service. They may store your email address to keep a record of the fact that they once sent an email to you.

If you leave a comment, information about your comment is shared with Akismet, an automated spam detection service.

How long I retain your data

If you leave a comment, the content of your comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This helps the site recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically, instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

If you sign up for the mailing list, the email address you provide is retained indefinitely, or until you request to unsubscribe from the list, so I can contact you with email updates and notifications about new blog posts.

What rights you have over your data

You can request to receive an exported file of the personal data I hold about you, including any data you have provided. You can also request that I erase any personal data I hold about you. This includes removing any and all comments you may have left on my blog posts, and your mailing list subscription data, if any. It does not include any data I am obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

How I protect your data

I adopt appropriate data collection, storage, and processing practices and security measures to protect against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction of your personal information and data stored on my server.
